On today’s blog, we’ll get you on board with a few of the most modern design trends in home furnishing and design. You’ll be able to narrow down your options to the best style of railing that matches your home aesthetics, and have a picture perfect Pinterest home with seamless design.

Whether you’re starting a series of renovations to fully transform your home from outdated to modern, or just making some much needed updates and repairs to vital areas of your home. Before you can get down to business, you’ll need to wade through the deep waters of Interior Design Styles and Aesthetics. Thanks to the magic of the internet, homeowners can find just about anything we want with a click of a button, however, sometimes we can get a little too much information and it gets overwhelming. Let us throw you a lifejacket and help guide you through these uncharted waters with some simple navigation tips.

First things first: Remember that handrails and stairs should be safe and accessible!
It’s important to assess the accessible needs and safety of each household member. Our expert stair and rail technicians can help guide you in selecting what will work best for your family’s functional needs, and find you the safest option within your style aesthetic. A reputable handrail installer and stair builder will take great care to ensure that your railings will be installed according to local building codes, and help ensure that your design choice has enough function as it does flair.
If you have small children or pets, it may be wise to choose materials and design elements in which little bodies cannot get stuck or lodged between. You may wish to avoid using glass panels in the presence of children, and opt for metal or wooden balusters and newels. Those with disabilities may need special accessibilities at lower heights, or handrails that accommodate a chair lift.

Secondly: Consider the small details for Indoor Handrails!
When you’re selecting your indoor handrail upgrades and indoor staircase elements, you’ll want to choose something that will stand the test of time. This is often a larger budget expense for interior design than wallpaper, light fixtures, and some paint cans. Select materials that will grow with your family and personal style tastes. Take stock of your current or desired future furniture and fixture aesthetics and match materials to that look. What colors and textures repeat throughout? Are you embracing the natural feel and architecture of your home, or are you looking to create contrast and visual interest? The possibilities are endless! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, share some sample photographs or “moodboards” with your handrail technician, interior designer, and builder so they can help guide you through the selection process.

What are some of the most popular Trending Design Aesthetics for indoor handrails and stairs in the home right now?
Design is ever changing to reflect the popular culture and social issues of the times, but here are some of the aesthetics we’re currently seeing the most!
Modern styles are an evergreen trend the last 5 years and counting. We’re seeing a lot of sleek, satin finish metal spindles and balusters placed very close together for narrow spacing to create a very striking, modern visual. This look overall fits great in a space for folks who love to constantly update their interior colors and furniture, as it doesn’t feature anything flashy or overbearing in theme. The simple, clean lines work well with just about any pattern, paint color, or furniture style in modern and contemporary design especially. For a touch of extra detail, you could also opt for decorative footing on the balusters or a decorative element such as a basket, cage, knot, twist, or other geometric decorative element for variation.
If you have combined materials such as wood and metal for budget reasons, but are looking for a “seamless” aesthetic, a great option would be to paint or stain the wood in the same color and finish as the metal (satin, eggshell, gloss, etc). There will still be clear textural differences and visual interest up close, but from a distance elsewhere in the home it will look very unified.
Here are some ways that our clients have interpreted a black metal look in their staircase projects:
Mixing your indoor handrail materials can create quite a statement in the home! Opting for handrail materials in a beautiful natural wood finish and combining it with a stark metal element like horizontal stainless steel bars gives fresh contrast. Utilizing an earthy, rustic wood material with bronze metal balusters combines the warmth of wood with industrial aesthetics for a captivating focal point. Adding rectangular wooden handrail material with bold, geometric metal panels alternating with plain bar balusters can give the system an artistic flair.
Here are some great examples of mixed materials in our recent client railing installations:
Floor-to-ceiling vertical panels with a squared handrail system in a natural wood style are perfect for a jaw-dropping focal point in the home. This combination of midcentury appeal and ultra-modern squared elements is absolutely to die for. We recently completed two of these custom pieces in the last year, and they’re some of our most beautiful and interesting installations to date. With this style of design, it’s easy to customize the end result. We personally love options like a clearcoat or a rich wood stain that allow the natural wood grain to show through, however, painting them a bright, crisp white or even a bold primary color can add quite a lot of personality and uniqueness to the railing system. We recommend only utilizing wood materials rather than opting for any metal elements in these systems to avoid a “jailhouse” aesthetic.

Does your home have a grand staircase or centrally visible staircase by the entry way? If so, you may want to choose materials and designs that command even more attention for a memorable entrance! Opting for white walls or custom paneling framing the staircase and henry way along with black metal and dark wood stained elements will certainly sprinkle in the magic you’re looking for. Keeping the other design elements like wall art or table scaping sparse allows guests to concentrate on the central staircase or grand entryway as the work of art itself. We love seeing decorative newels, elegant curved handrail at the final stair on the staircase, high-gloss polished handrail finish, along with beautiful decorative metal panel elements. Likewise, this can also be a great time to opt for something monochromatic with a little colordrenching, keeping the staircase neutral while adding creative decor around it can create a unique visual aesthetic.
