Should Stair Treads Match Your Flooring?

Let’s chat about it!

When it comes to stair design, the decision to match or contrast your stair treads with your flooring is a big decision.  Contrary to the internet, however, there isn’t actually any interior design police out there, so the long and short of it is: you can do what you like!  Overall there are several factors to consider: personal style, functionality, overall design aesthetics.  Finding a middle ground between all three is ideal, but there’s really no wrong answer!  On today’s blog, we’ll explore some of the different options available to you so that you can select the best staircase design for your home or business.  By the end of our post, we hope you’ll know everything there is to know about stair tread styling and feel confident in the selection you make for your own home!

Exploring Personal Preferences and Multiple Style Options for Staircase Design!

Matching Stair Treads to the Flooring

Some homeowners prefer everything to be a seamless look, so matching stair treads with your flooring is indeed one of the most popular options.  Generally speaking this is best done at the same time as floor installation or refinishing, as that’s much easier to color match material.  Your builders and designers can also work together to coordinate lumber and staining or paint options.  This matching look does provide a nice sense of continuity from floor to floor and room to room that many homeowners appreciate.

Perfect matching your stair treads and flooring is very popular for open concept builds especially.  However, this is not the easiest look to achieve after the fact. Close-match finishes are possible if you are repairing or replacing stairs, but there may be slight discrepancies due to staining batches or age of flooring versus new lumber.  Additionally, if you have a wood floor or wood stairs and one or the other is replaced with engineered flooring options, there maybe a slight but usually near-imperceptible difference.

Another option for matching in aesthetics is to combine different hardwoods and use the same finish over the top of the material.  Selecting the best wood materials for stairs can be a fun, and interesting process. You’ll want to look for stair tread materials with a similar look to your current existing flooring.  For instance, pairing hardwood flooring with hardwood stair treads in a similarly toned material makes for a great look if you apply the same finishin, even with slightly different materials like white oak flooring with red oak stairs. There may be a slight variance but both have a wonderful natural grain feature that pair nicely.  Some engineered wood options are a very realistic match to actual hardwood flooring, and you might be able to stain the existing stair treads to match the flooring by stripping and refinishing the staircase.

For houses with carpeting, some homeowners also choose to carpet the stairs or add carpeted tread covers with sticky-grip backings for continuity.  Stairs however will often wear mat down a little quicker than other areas of the home and need replacing first since they’re high-traffic areas.  Make sure you consider the color for easy visibility on the stairs, and a suitable texture to accommodate the safety of all family members or pets in the home for grip.  Darker colors may disguise stairs visibility and lead to falls or tripping, unless the stairwell is adequately lit.

In summation, this is a great option for thsoe looking to reduce visual clutter and interior design clashing. However, achieving exact matches may be a little difficult after your home is built, but it is possible to get quite similar looks for stair treads and flooring. It’s best to purchase the materials from the same supplier or batches if possible or new construction or renovation. Otherwise, providing swatches to your supplier can assist in that match process, but understanding subtle differences may still apply and can alleviate a lot of stress overall.

Let’s check out some other options so you can continue to weigh the pros and cons of your ideal staircase tread styling.

Crafting Cohesion Through Thoughtful Contrast of Material and Finishes

An alternative to the “matchy matchy” vibe is something with an extra punch of visual interest with contrasting tones, textures, or finishes.  This can help define your staircase as a focal point and central style feature of the home, especially for those central in entryways.  It can also help the stairs be more visible for safety and accessibility, too.  Overall there are several ways to style your stairs in contrast to your home’s flooring.

The most affordable option for stair tread and flooring, and an especially helpful choice if you weren’t able to perfect color match, is to paint the risers and stain the treads. This provides a little disconnect from the tread and your unmatched flooring color, while adding a nice stylized contrast to the stairway.  Contrasting the stair treads and risers with a lighter stain than the flooring can also create a punch of interest and even make the home look larger by providing more illusion of depth.

Some homeowners also choose to embellish their risers with custom painted murals or stenciled details.  Popular trends online in this realm include a bookcase style stairway displaying the spine and titles of their favorite books, floral motifs that vine up the stairwell, playing with geometric designs like vertical striping, or a gradient of solid colors from dark to light as you ascend or descend.

Similarly, selecting carpeting in the same color family, just a lighter or darker tone ,can create a monochromatic look that doesn’t feel as dated or overwhelming.  Selecting carpet hues from a complimentary tone can provide a little whimsy and charm, giving your home some additional character and flair.

Playing with finishes like glossy versus satin versus flat/matte can also be a very wallet-friendly option!  If you have glossy floors, finishing your stairs with something less shiny can add some visual interest without breaking the bank. It can also help with traction as they’re less slippery overall.

As you can see, there are lots of great ways to style with contrast.

Playing With Texture and Whimsy for a Bold Artistic Finish

Add a punch of design by choosing a patterned or embroidered carpet runner.  A runner rug is great for those looking to add even more personality and flair to their staircase. Pulling different colored elements from the different rooms visible from the staircase can provide not just visual interest but aid in uniting the overall interior design.  For instance, if your stairs are central and cut through the living room and kitchen via a foyer, you can select textures, patterns, or shapes from your kitchen design as well as color palettes from the living room, repeating the motif in the rug pattern can make for a more unifying feel.

Even if you choose to keep the runner monochromatic and coordinate with furniture or wall color, selecting an interesting texture or fabric choice can draw the eye in. Experimenting with velvety fabrics can create a luxe feel, while low-pile options can give a cleaner, more modern feel, and high-pile shag options can give off a modern-retro energy.

A modern trend in runner use on stairs also includes little runner bars that can add another decorative style option based on finishes like gold or silver or black to match your balusters or other hardware in the home; they can also make it easier to switch out the runner without damaging the treads as much as other fixative options.

If your home has mostly hardwoods and tiled flooring, carpeting just the staircase can also be an interesting idea. It adds a little pop of color and textural interest to break up the monotony similarly to how a runner rug would, but a little more permanent.

Tiling your stair treads in a similar color scheme to adjoining rooms near the staircase can also be an eye-catching design option.  This can be a little bit pricier than the aforementioned, but is great for stairways leading from a front door to a landing, or in high-traffic areas such as those leading to the backyard, pet areas, or workrooms where mess may be tracked in. The tile is not only visually appealing but adds a nice texture and easy-to-clean feature as opposed to carpeting or runners.

When it Comes to Home Styling, There’s No Right or Wrong Answer

In conclusion, the long and short of it is: your stairs don’t have to perfectly match your floors, and it all comes down to personal preference.  Choosing between a perfect match or an international contrast is a style option flexible to your taste as a homeowner. Of course, if you find yourself overwhelmed with options or need a little assistance, your local interior designer or stair contractor can help guide you in the right direction!  The good news is, most of the options listed on today’s blog are also easily swappable: paint can be repainted, staining can be removed and refinished, runners and carpets can be swapped out… so you have plenty of options to change the look as your personal style evolves, too!  The possibilities are truly endless.
