YouTube and TikTok are all abuzz with the hottest interior design trends and smart home technologies.  Scroll for long enough and you may find yourself wondering what it would be like to add some of these new tech updates to your own home.  While some of the content you’re seeing is heavily AI generated by wishful thinkers who want the future to catch up a little faster, some of the ideas are actually doable, and pretty clever if we do say so.  Today on the blog, we’re going to explore some interesting ways you can add modern technology and smart lighting to your home to improve safety on your handrails and staircases.

Let’s Talk Smart Home Options: Smart Cameras, Apps, and Sensors

Modern smart home technology has come a long way!  In recent years, more and more companies are throwing their hats into the ring with safety monitoring apps, smart home security cameras, specialty safety sensors, and more.  It’s easy to add smart tech to your home’s railings and stairs to increase safety and visibility.  For instance, Special infrared sensor devices can be mounted along stairwells to help your family members stay safe in the home. If your loved one should trip and fall, the infrared sensor can detect the movement and sends an alert to an app with selected emergency contacts.  Some of them can also be programmed to monitor daily routines, and alert you when they’re disrupted, so you can check up on your loved ones and monitor for emergencies.

Installing a small in-home security camera with a narrow field of view and motion sensor detection can also increase safety in homes with pets, children, and the elderly.  Placing them at the top and bottom of stairs or in hallways near the stairwell can help you monitor foot traffic and keep alert to falls or tripping incidents.  Pet Monitoring cameras can be programmed to follow your pet from room to room or oscilate regularly to ensure your pet remains safe when home alone; many of them even include a speaker option to recall your pet away from danger, or give them a cue to return to a bed or crate to stop a problem behavior.

Let’s Talk About Smart Home Lighting Options

As we’ve already discussed on previous blogs, stairs can pose a safety hazard when poorly lit.  Another way you can easily increase safety in your home is to ensure a well-lit stairwell.  Proper lighting will prevent accidents and ensure that folks can navigate up and down with ease.  Well-designed stairwell lighting can not only improve safety, but add quite a bit of design and character to your home as well.

In the last few years, we’ve had several clients installing custom lighting under the handrails or along the staircase itself, and they’ve requested this be incorporated into plans. While it does present its challenges as a stair designer and railing installer, customized options like this do have a very polished finished look, and the enhancement does pay off in the long run!

In addition to providing an opportunity for homeowners to put their unique style spin on lighting, increasing stairwell lighting adds a layer of accessibility to your home.   Adding smarthome lighting to your stairs and railings can ensure that everyone can move around safely and confidently.  For folks with mobility issues, having the option to increase visibility with a hands-free command to your smart home device or phone can be a big win!  For children who often need a little extra help to navigate stairs safely, illuminating railings can make them more visually striking and enticing to use.  For pets who may have a little fear of using stairs, increased lighting can help their depth perception and decrease their risk of fall and injury.

On the convenience end of things, setting up automated schedules for the lighting in an app or with a remote is a huge help.  For instance, you canset a timer for lights to turn on when you’re on your way home from work, or at night when you’re frequently using the stairs and rails to go back and forth from the bedroom to the main living areas.

Motion activated options are even more cost efficient than app-controlled timers. They’re triggered on first detection of movement and can automatically light up stairs and railings when you need it. There’s no need to be fumbling with your phone or a wall switch, making it easy for every family member to use regardless of age or disability.  This is great especially for areas like stairs to basements, attics, or laundryrooms where you need a little extra visibility but aren’t using it on a daily basis.

Let’s Talk About Lighting Style

No matter what style of lighting you choose, a professionally installed lighting system in your stairwell can truly transform the look and feel of your home.  There are several different options to consider when adding lighting to your stairwell and staircase.

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is a very popular option thanks to its unintrusive and flush design.  When installed into ceilings and walls, these lights add significant illumination and visibility to the area without conflicting with the home’s design aesthetics. The result is clean, sleek, and gives maximum visibility.  Opting for LEDs that allow for adjusting the color temperature allows you to control the perfect color cast in the area for increased visibility.  For certain smart bulbs, you can also add mood lighting for special occasions such as Halloween or Christmas, or add a little ambiance for your date night or special event party!  Likewise, dimmable options give the homeowner a chance to increase visibility without sacrificing coziness by selecting that sweet spot of lighting.  Recessed lighting is durable and affordable, but might be a little too bright for some individuals unless you’re using dimmable options.

LED Strip Lights

This type of lighting is all over the internet in popular decor and home influencer vlogs.  Chances are you’ve seen this advertised in multiple ways from desk lighting to under cabinet lighting, and yes, even stairwells.  LED strips are easily integrated into your home design by laying flush against the stairwells or on the underside of handrails without compromising safety.  These versatile strips provide significant ambient lighting to increase visibility on and under stair treads. They make a great option in a very modernized home, and can help create a true statement focal point of your staircase.  With the touch of a button or swipe on a phone app, you can adjust your stairwell lighting to suit your needs. Setting your LED strips on a daily timer can ensure that you’re only illuminating the stairs at full brightness when you really need it.  During the day, for instance, you can set the lights to produce a soft glow for a little ambiance and extra visibility, without taking away from the home’s interior design; at night, you can fully illuminate the strip lighting for maximum visibility and reduce those sleepy stair slips.  This is a great option for homes with children and elderly folk as it can be dimmed to reduce glare, or increased easily to provide top visibility for those with visual impairments.

Wall Sconces and Cordless Wall Lamps

If you’re looking for an extra opportunity to ramp up your personal style as well as increase visibility, we highly recommend wall sconces and cordless wall lamps.  Wall sconces can be purchased in a variety of styles from both modern and historical reproductions.  You can even find LED battery operated candle holders or floating candle options for a whimsical touch.  Wall sconces enhance visual interest and put a unique stamp of personality in your stairwell, as opposed to the “invisible” look of sleek recessed lighting. We love the way wall sconces and battery operated wall lamps can add creativity and a bold statement. It’s also a great opportunity for seasonal decor, as you can swap out the glass or lampshades for something colorful or patterned to match the holiday. We’re seeing an increase in wall sconces and even neon-style LED wall lamps in maximalist and modern designed homes. It’s a great way to add a pop of color and showcase additional design choices while increasing safety and efficiency.  Using smart bulbs and rechargeable battery bulbs can decrease electricity costs, provide an opportunity for custom dimmable lighting and color choice, and update a more traditional feature with modern tech.
